Venetian Plaster
in Venice
Hand-applied marble-like wall finishes for Venice homes and commercial spaces. Matte, satin, and polished finishes in any color.
Venice’s design identity — the beach houses, the canals, the contemporary renovations of Abbot Kinney and the surrounding streets — creates a strong context for Venetian plaster. The neighborhood’s creative community and its design-forward renovation culture have embraced the finish for its authenticity, warmth, and the visual depth it brings to Venice’s characteristic mix of old and new architecture.
Most popular Venice finishes: Coastal neutrals — Ocean, Sand, and warm whites — are most popular in Venice, reflecting the beach proximity and the light-filled, open character of Venice’s best-designed homes.
Venice interiors succeed when they balance the raw coastal character of the neighborhood with genuine design quality. Venetian plaster does this naturally — its handmade texture and warmth suits the beach house aesthetic while its material sophistication elevates it above the casual finishes typical of coastal renovation.
What Sets Venetian Plaster Apart
- Depth and luminosity. Venetian plaster is built up in multiple thin layers, each burnished before the next is applied. The result is a depth that paint — however carefully applied — cannot replicate. It catches light differently throughout the day.
- Completely permanent. Unlike paint or wallpaper, Venetian plaster is a structural coating. It bonds chemically to the wall substrate and does not peel, crack, or fade. Properly maintained it lasts 20+ years.
- Three finish levels. Matte (raw, gallery quality), satin (warm and luminous), and high-polished (maximum reflectivity and depth). All achievable with the same material — the finish level is controlled by the burnishing technique.
- Applied in occupied homes. No demolition, minimal smell, no significant dust. We work in occupied Venice homes and leave each day’s work area clean before we leave.
- Licensed applicators. CA Contractor License #1092421. Not a painter offering plaster as an add-on — dedicated artisan coating specialists.

The Application Process
Venetian plaster is a multi-layer process. Each coat is applied by hand, allowed to partially cure, then burnished before the next layer. The number of coats and the burnishing technique determines the final finish level.
We assess the existing walls, fill any cracks or imperfections, sand where necessary, and apply a bonding primer formulated for Venetian plaster. The quality of the preparation determines the quality of the final result. We don’t rush this stage.
The first layer of Venetian plaster is hand-applied using a steel trowel. Color is custom mixed to specification — we bring samples to the consultation and can produce test patches on your wall in your specific lighting before committing to the full application.
Subsequent coats are applied and burnished while partially cured. The burnishing process — compressing the plaster surface with a steel trowel — develops the characteristic luminosity and depth of Venetian plaster. For high-polish finishes, additional coats and burnishing cycles are used.
The completed surface is sealed with a finishing wax or penetrating sealer appropriate to the finish level and the room’s use. Matte finishes receive a flat wax. Polished finishes receive a clear hard wax that enhances the luminosity. The wall is complete and fully usable immediately after the sealer dries.
